Tax Credit Advisor, November 2010: Nancy Rase, president of Homes for America, Inc., thrives on the demands of being an affordable housing developer.

“I think of being a developer as having the best of both worlds,” says Rase, who began her career working at the housing authority in her native Hagerstown, Md. “You get to be a bit of a free spirit and creative, but you also still have the day-to-day challenges of running a business and looking at the short term and the long term and have business challenges as well as deal challenges. It’s a multi-level world that always has something different.”

A nonprofit affordable housing developer-owner headquartered in Annapolis, Md., Homes for America was started in September 1994 by Trudy Parisa McFall, its Chairman, and Nancy Rase, President. They started the nonprofit after years of service at the state housing finance agency, the Maryland Community Development Administration, where McFall was Director and Rase the Deputy Director and Director of Multifamily Programs.
