Given this, the company has been reaping positive results from winning property tax appeals and locking in utility rates for a number of its developments. It has also utilized federal dollars to help pay for energy efficiency improvements.

 “We’ve tried to make sure that we’re focused on the expense side and where we can save dollars,” says Burns. “And some of the biggest expenses in operating our properties are taxes, utilities, and insurance.”
